Organic beef, pork, and poultry are rapidly gaining in popularity, despite their significantly higher costs. The reasons are numerous; health issues, animal welfare, and environmental concerns top the list. Organic meat is raised without growth hormones, antibiotics, or animal byproducts in feed. Factory farms breed disease, encourage physical impairments, and generally do not place a great deal of value on animal welfare.
By contrast, smaller organic farms tend to provide better care for their animals than larger industrial operations. Animals are provided access to outdoor pens or pasture rather than confined to cramped feedlots. The resulting naturally-raised meats are often healthier; organic grass-fed beef, for example, contains higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids.
